We are strengthening our focus on prevention and early detection of health problems. We are also changing our vaccine protocols for less frequent administration of some vaccines and safer formulations. As a pet-owner, you might ask: " What can be done to extend your pet's life and allow for prevention and early detection of problems?" We approach this question with a integrated response:

Q&A with Dr. Holman: The Wellness Approach to Veterinary Care
Q: Why do an exam every 6 months?
A: Our pets age much faster than we realize, due to their decreased life span. Doing a physical exam every 6 months in a pet is analogous to a physical exam every 3-4 years for a human.
Animals with regular exams and bloodwork, good nutrition, and preventative care live longer!
Q: Why do bloodwork every year, if my pet isn't sick?
A: Wellness bloodwork not only allows us to gauge their general health, but also enables early detection of problems - which means more effective treatment and a better prognosis.
Doing annual bloodwork in a patient is analogous to doing it once every 7-8 years in a human, based on life expectancy, and also provides baseline information that we can compare to should your pet get sick.
Q: Why do a dental cleaning when my dog's teeth look fine?
A: Studies have demonstrated that maintaining good oral cavity health will prevent development of infection that can spread to and affect other organs in the body.
A short and routine, prophylactic dental cleaning is far better than a three-hour procedure with multiple x-rays and extractions that must be done to diagnose and treat advanced oral cavity disease.
Q: Why should I change my dog's food to Iams Premium Protection when he likes his current diet?
A: Iams Premium Protection offers the following benefits:
- Excellence in nutrition that store-bought brands cannot.
- Ingredients to prevent tartar and plaque formation.
- Ingredients to help slow the progression of osteoarthritis.
- Contains essential fatty acids to achieve a healthy skin and coat.
In short, animals with regular exams and bloodwork, good nutrition, and preventative dental care live longer, happier lives!
